Green, Blue, Front, Back

Carefully selected crayons. Green, blue, brown, grey.

Coordinated steps. Right foot front, back then side to side.

Laughter.

Learning a dance with three young men. Drawing and singing with kids.

Delight.

This was my worship this Sunday at Grace Covenant Church as we gathered to CELEBRATE life, DELIGHT in creation, and PRAISE God, and it was PURE JOY and utterly TRANSFORMATIVE.

I entered into church not feeling well and not really wanting to be there (confession is good for the soul, and since I am the pastor of the church… this is TRUE confession!). But as the worship team led the small gathering, I sat with eight children at a little table in the back. Together, we colored and slowly and softly we joined our voices with the band. Soon, the music came with a latin vibe. One of the 5th grade boys shouted, I LOVE THIS SONG!

So we danced and we laughed. Oh, we laughed.

Four of us… three boys and their pastor. Right foot forward, back, side-to-side. Our movement and joy caught the attention of some others who smiled and laughed with us. DELIGHT CAUSING DELIGHT.

I still didn’t feel great, but in that moment there was no place I would have rather been. As we sat back down, our breathless laughter turning into quiet, one of the boys said, THAT WAS FUN as he returned to his coloring, singing along with the next song.
